Make sure to check these restrictions before traveling to Japan. Bringing prohibited items may result in fines, confiscation, or legal penalties.
■ Drugs & Illegal Substances
・Illegal drugs are strictly prohibited.
・This includes cannabis (marijuana), even if it is legal or prescribed in your home country.
💡 Japan has zero-tolerance drug laws, and penalties can be extremely severe.
■ Medications
・Some prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medicines are restricted or banned in Japan..
・Medications containing stimulants, narcotics, or certain specific ingredients (such as pseudoephedrine, codeine, or dexamphetamine, commonly found in cold and allergy medicines) are strictly banned.
・Sleeping pills, painkillers, and ADHD medications may require prior official approval.
・If your medicine is restricted, you must apply for a permit called “Yunyu Kakuninsho” (Import Confirmation Certificate) online before your trip.
💡Always check the Official Ministry of Health Website (MHLW) in advance. Bringing restricted medication without permission will result in confiscation or legal penalties at customs.
■ Food Products (Animal & Plant Quarantine)
・Meat products (such as beef jerky, sausages, and meat-infused snacks) are strictly prohibited.
・Most fresh fruits, vegetables, and dairy products are also banned or heavily restricted.
💡 Japan’s customs and quarantine inspections are extremely strict. Failure to declare these items can lead to heavy fines or arrest.
■ E-Cigarettes & Vapes
・Nicotine-containing liquids for e-cigarettes (vapes) are classified as medicinal products in Japan.
・You are only allowed to bring up to a 1-month supply for personal use. Anything beyond this requires an official permit.
■ Weapons
・Firearms, ammunition, knives (with blades exceeding a certain length), and explosives are strictly prohibited.
■ Counterfeit Goods
・Fake brand-name products, pirated software, and counterfeit items are strictly banned. Bringing them in violates intellectual property laws.
■ Large Amounts of Cash
・If you are carrying cash, checks, or gold worth ¥1,000,000 or more (or its foreign currency equivalent) into or out of Japan, you must declare it to Customs.
💡 This is not a limit — you can carry more, but a customs declaration is strictly required both when entering and leaving Japan.
